It was hard to sleep the next morning. We’d definitely done too much the day before. It causes the body and the mind to be wired. We were pleased to have a nice oat coffee, made with the bialetti though. Worth lugging up the milk. It’s the little things that help.

We had pancakes for breakfast. The flour was useful for something at least. We had an odd morning. We’d overdone it and it made us lose faith in our journey a bit. It’s hard to remember that the feelings pass and you have to ignore your mind sometimes. We eventually pushed past. Frankie went to lie down. Jonathan felt like if we had an extra day then this was the day to hike in the mountains.

It was a stunning day. It was ridiculous how blessed with Sun it was. Leaving at about 11am I hiked up behind Obersays. It was steep and relentless. My heart was soon pounding in my head and I questioned whether this was a good idea. But I’m only able to go up one day and this is it so I pressed on. I went up to a small group of huts at Stams. A lot of families have huts in Switzerland. They’re not isolated, they’re in clusters.

From Stams it was up onto the ridge and across to an arbitrary peak called Hana at 2056m. I ran down. It was easier as it was so steep. My legs were not happy. This was definitely a mistake! I endured the jarring muscle pain all the way down to Trimmis.

If we were staying an extra night and we felt this crap I wanted to stock up on good sustenance. Bread flour for example. Lebkuchen, obviously. I took the bus back up with a student who explained how much he loves cars (but not electric) and skiing. His inability to see the incompatibility was scary but he was still young. The bus driver hated bicycles. They get in the way on the hill apparently.

For me, a rest day meant not leaving the house bar a morning mocha on the little balcony. After sending Jonathan on his way a nap was on the cards but it wasn’t to be.
A little doom scrolling later, there were flapjacks which needed to be made incase we were to leave in the morning as we had originally planned. Like our last rest stop we had bought ingredients to make some supplies for the road. This time I made even more as they go down so well!
With Jonathan still out there was more time to relax and attempt to stream something although the wifi didn’t lend itself all that well to it. So I ended up doing a little more doomscrolling than is probably sensible.

Reunited again we decided we wanted a rerun on the pizza, so we made it again. It turned out much nicer, we had roasted chickpeas and carrots with the vegan cheese we’d got from Lidl. It’s not got any nutritional value but we enjoyed it as a treat nonetheless. We also made bread and enjoyed it with the homemade quince jam that Simone had left us. We were very happy to confirm the extra night. An extra day of rest was definitely necessary.
