Christmas hiding from the rain

25-26/12/24

We hadn’t got each other presents. Well, only each other’s presence.

Lots of other people had the same idea
Monumental explanation

We went for a walk up Philopappos hill, near the flat, opposite the Acropolis. We visited the ‘prison of Socrates’ which probably isn’t a prison he was ever in no matter how many people on google say that he was. There’s a monument up the top of the hill too.

“Prison of Socrates”
All the parks have these little booths dotted around

Christmas roast consisted of nut and lentil parcels, roast potatoes, cabbage and we had even found sprouts. We had banoffee pie for afters. We spent the rest of the day watching television. It poured with rain all evening and all night.

Still raining

On Boxing Day it was still raining. After about 11am we walked up Lycabettus hill. It was a great viewpoint but it was still raining on and off. There’s a church up there but it was a bit uninteresting. We wandered down.

Parliament – we think
Changing of the guard consisted of a truck pulling up and then all swapping places. Everyone, including us was waiting for a ceremony!
The view from Lycabettus and a weird memorial to plastic wrappers. Humans are weird.

Back at the flat we had another roast dinner. Pretty much the same as before but no less enjoyable, only missing cranberry sauce. It’s not a thing in Greece. For dessert we had millifeule. Kind of. Pastry and cherries in syrup with lashings of coconut milk. The coconut milk here is 91% coconut and is basically cream. We watched more easy going films and monged out.

People scratching messages into cactuses. More weirdness.

Cherries, coconut cream and pastry. Life doesn’t get much better.

We’d have to leave tomorrow. We packed away as much as we could the night before.

Bonus: Not a white Christmas
