3/1/24

A quiet day was on the cards. We had no planned excursions and would take the day to get ready to leave and hopefully enjoy the downtime.

We had a lazily timed breakfast, some crepes with the last banana and a persimmon as the fillings. The shops had been shut for two days and we needed some more fruit and vegetables so we wandered into town. On the way we saw a date palm. For some reason we hadn’t been inspecting them sufficiently. They were bearing delicious fruit.

We obtained some broccoli, it was cheaper than cauliflower, and also some flour and split peas. The latter are known as ‘fava’ in Greece and are a popular legume to make a dish similar to hummus.

On the way back home we attacked the date palms. They’re ridiculously spiky and it was hard to get to their delicious fruit. Fortunately, as the dates fall they impale themselves on the spikes below and can be plucked off. Carefully. A few wounds later and we had a good bag of them. They’re like Tunisian dates, except they haven’t been soaked in glucose syrup. We knew why they did that now, these wouldn’t be a successful commodity. But we liked them.

We went to the beach to walk in the water. It felt silly not to have gone in the water at all. But it had never been the right weather when we were by the beach. We had pasta for dinner, with aubergine and the broccoli. We made a big loaf of bread too. And also cooked the fava down into a nice curry flavoured dip to take with us. We packed our things as best we could and let the slight fear of the coming unknown wash over us.
